How to choose the right headphones
8 Oct 2026
The right headphones depend on how you use them: music on the go, work calls, sport or gaming. These are the key points.
1. Type
- Wireless earbuds: small and portable with a charging case, good for commuting and sport.
- Over-ear headphones: more comfortable for long sessions and richer sound, but bigger and heavier.
- Neckband earphones: usually longer battery and hard to lose.
- Wired: no charging needed, good for gaming and studio use.
2. Noise cancelling
Active noise cancelling (ANC) uses electronics to cancel ambient noise and helps on transport, but raises the price. Passive isolation comes from the shape and ear tips and is often enough.
3. Battery
Earbuds usually last 4 to 8 hours per charge, and the case adds several more charges. Choose by how long you use them each day.
4. Call quality
If you talk a lot, look at the number of microphones and call noise reduction; good music sound does not mean a good microphone.
5. Connection and latency
Pick Bluetooth 5 or newer for a more stable connection. For games and video, look for a low-latency mode so sound matches the picture.
6. Comfort and water resistance
Try the fit if you can; headphones that hurt will not get used. IPX4 or higher suits sport and sweat.
7. Charging and port
Most headphones charge over USB-C. Read our charging and cables guide to pick the right cable.
