How to choose the right smartwatch
8 Oct 2026
A smartwatch shows notifications and tracks your activity and sleep, but there are lots of options. These points help you pick what suits you.
1. Compatibility with your phone
This is the most important point. Apple watches work with iPhone only, and native Android watches work with Android phones. Watches that rely on their own companion app often work with both systems, but check the required app and supported systems before you buy.
2. Battery
- Full-featured watches usually need charging every one to two days.
- Lighter watches and sports bands can last longer.
A bright always-on screen, calls and constant tracking all shorten it.
3. Water resistance
An IP67 or IP68 rating means resistance to splashes, sweat and rain, which is enough for everyday use. Swimming needs a rating that is stated explicitly, such as 5ATM, so do not swim with a watch that does not list it.
4. Screen
An AMOLED screen is clearer and more vivid, especially in sunlight. The size should suit your wrist: a very large watch is annoying during sleep.
5. Sensors and health
Most watches measure heart rate, oxygen, sleep and steps. These readings are approximate, for daily tracking, not medical devices; see a doctor for any health concern.
6. Calls and GPS
Some watches let you take calls over Bluetooth from the watch itself. If you run or hike, look for built-in GPS so you do not need to carry your phone.
7. Straps
Choose a watch with replaceable straps so you can change its look or replace a worn one. Browse watch straps.
Check the warranty too, and prefer a reasonably priced watch from a trusted brand. Browse available smartwatches.
